in 1954, u.s. marshal teddy daniels and his partner go to an institute for the criminally insane of shutter island. they are investigating the missing of rachel solando, a patient who vanished from a locked room without anyone noticing. rachel was sent here after drowning her own three children, however she still believes that she is at home and her three children are still alive.
but the real reason that teddy is on this case is he is following the trace of the man who burned down his apartment and killed his wife. he believes that the institute on shutter island is doing the experiment on human, and he will find the evidence to prove it. however since he arrives at the island, he begins to have weird dreams about his dead wife and severe headaches. will he be able to accomplish his mission before his opponents know what he is up to and stop him before he can acquire the information?
the film is based on the famous novel of the same name by dennis lehane first published in published 2003. the film adaptation is favorable in term of psychological suspense. the cast are great, plot is predictable, and i would say 138-minute theatrical cut is a bit too long for me.
