coco avant chanel is a dramatic film about the life of french designer, coco chanel. the film depicts her story since she was an orphan named “gabrille”, she was left there with her sister. after she left the orphanage, she and her sister become cabaret performers in a small club where she meets étienne balsan, the man who supposedly changes her life….

i don’t know if it is the script or her life is boring. the cast, the cinematography, the music, the performance are exceptional. but i felt so boring when i was watching this film. unlike “la môme“, coco avant chanel features no climax or whatsoever. dramatic moments? yes there is one sensational scene at 8 minutes-before-the-filme-ends. as the title of the film suggested, coco avant chanel is the life of coco “before” the rise of chanel, so there’s no magic there, she met someone, she made something and voilà! she’s got the money to start her own business, everyone loves her (except the owner of the pub in the begining), she has talent and she has style. the end!

  • Last year, there was a television movie here in the U.S. featuring Shirley MacLaine as Coco Chanel.

It’s very interesting to see the French version of the film with one of my favorite actresses, Audrey Tautou.
